Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Margaret Tyldsley. His paternal grandparents were Charles Mather and Alice Lever. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Charles, William, James, Mary, Nancy, Alice and Elizabeth. He was the sixth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 1 in November 1842 in Bolton. His burial was on November 4th, 1842 at St. Peter's (Bolton).²¹
