Elizabeth's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Margaret Tyldsley. Her paternal grandparents were Charles Mather and Alice Lever. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Charles, William, James, Thomas, Mary, Alice and Alice. She was the youngest of the eight children.
