Edward's father was Thomas Lewis and his mother was Alice Emma Taylor. His paternal grandparents were William Lewis and Catherine Whalley. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, Thomas, Alice, Edna, Eunice and Jessie. He was the youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 89 in November 2004 in St. Helens.²
