Robert's father was Robert Knowles and his mother was Mary Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Francis, John, Francis, Ellen, Alice, Jane, Elizabeth and Ellen.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.  He died at 2 months old on August 27th, 1867 in Little Bolton.  He was buried on August 27th, 1867 at St. Mary (Deane).²
