Alice's father was Robert Knowles and her mother was Mary Ann Mather. Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Francis, John, Francis, Robert, Ellen, Jane, Elizabeth and Ellen. She was the third oldest of the nine children.

General Notes
- In 1861, only Francis (7) and Alice (14) were with Robert and Mary Ann. The other childen had perished.
  
  In 1881, Alice (27) was married to Arthur and living at No 24 Villiers St
