Jane's father was Robert Knowles and her mother was Mary Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Francis, John, Francis, Robert, Ellen, Alice, Elizabeth and Ellen.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.  She died in 1860 in Little Bolton.¹
