Ellen's father was Robert Knowles and her mother was Mary Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Francis, John, Francis, Robert, Alice, Jane, Elizabeth and Ellen.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.  She died at 7 months old in April 1855 in Little Bolton.  She was buried on April 26th, 1855 at St. Mary (Deane).²
