Ellen's father was Robert Knowles and her mother was Mary Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Francis, John, Francis, Robert, Ellen, Alice, Jane and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the nine children.  She died at the age of 4 in 1874 in Little Bolton.²
