Elizabeth was born in January 1863 in Little Bolton and her baptism took place on January 17th, 1866 at All Saints, Little Bolton.1 2  Elizabeth's father was Robert Knowles and her mother was Mary Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Francis, John, Francis, Robert, Ellen, Alice, Jane and Ellen.  She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.  She died at the age of 8 in December 1871 in Little Bolton.1
