John's father was Robert Knowles and his mother was Mary Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Francis, Francis, Robert, Ellen, Alice, Jane, Elizabeth and Ellen.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died in 1858 in Little Bolton.¹
