Samuel was born in April 1824 in Halliwell and his christening took place on April 11th, 1824 at St. Mary (Deane).1 2  Samuel's father was Ralph Kay and his mother was Ruth Taylor.  His paternal grandparents were James Kay and Betty Holt. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, John, Elizabeth, Sarah, Hannah and Rachel. He had two adopted sisters named Mary and Ruth.  He died at the age of 66 on October 22nd, 1890 in Bolton.3

‌Samuel and Elizabeth were married in a civil ceremony in December 1846 in Bolton.3  They had four sons named William, Samuel, John and Samuel.  There are no more children.
