According to Rahph's baptism, James was a Weaver.
James was a weaver, initially at Harwood, but moved to Edgworth around 1800 (as baptisms after that show Edgworth).
James and Betty were married in a religious ceremony on October 17th, 1792 at St. Peter's (Bolton).3 They had four sons and three daughters, named Ralph, John, Thomas, James, Anne, Sarah and Betty. There are no more children.

From Deane on Marriage record of 1817. According to Death Index, Ralph was 47 when he died, so born about 1792. We cant be sure where Ralph was born, but his children were born in Halliwell, and the family were living at New Road Halliwell after he died in 1839/41.

There are two christening/family records with James and Betty as parents from Halliwell. The date fits perfectly with a date of birth in about 1892. Also, his first daughter was Elizabeth (Betty) and second son was Samuel.
Death Notes
Ruth Widow in 1851, and presumably also 1841 as Ralph not present on census, so died after 1837 (his last child was born then) but before 1841.
FreeBMD has matches for 1839 and 1844, but 1839 is the more likely as wanst on 1841 census or a witness to his daughters wedding of 1843.
