Rachel was born in June 1848 in Lostock.1  Rachel's father was John Howarth and her mother was Ellen Bullough.  Her paternal grandparents were Adam Howarth and Ann Aspinall. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Adam, John, Ann, Alice, Martha, Elizabeth, Pamela, Ellen and Martha.  She was the third youngest of the ten children.
