Alice was born in 1837 in Westhoughton.1  Alice's father was John Howarth and her mother was Ellen Bullough.  Her paternal grandparents were Adam Howarth and Ann Aspinall. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Adam, John, Ann, Martha, Elizabeth, Pamela, Ellen, Rachel and Martha.  She was the third oldest of the ten children.
