Pamela was born in September 1844 in Lostock.1  Pamela's father was John Howarth and her mother was Ellen Bullough.  Her paternal grandparents were Adam Howarth and Ann Aspinall. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Adam, John, Ann, Alice, Martha, Elizabeth, Ellen, Rachel and Martha.  She was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
