John was born in 1804 in Westhoughton.1  John's father was Adam Howarth and his mother was Ann Aspinall. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Ann, Joseph, Adam, Ann, Betty and Mary.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 50 on January 10th, 1854 in Lostock.  He was buried on January 15th, 1854 at St. Mary (Deane).2

‌John and Ellen were married in a religious ceremony on November 5th, 1826 at St. Mary (Deane) witnessed by Abraham Boardman & Richard Morris.3   They had two sons and eight daughters, named Adam, John, Ann, Alice, Martha, Elizabeth, Pamela, Ellen, Rachel and Martha.  There are no more children.
