Martha was born in August 1850 in Sharples.1  Martha's father was John Howarth and her mother was Ellen Bullough.  Her paternal grandparents were Adam Howarth and Ann Aspinall. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Adam, John, Ann, Alice, Martha, Elizabeth, Pamela, Ellen and Rachel.  She was the second youngest of the ten children.
