John was born in December 1852 in Lostock.1  John's father was John Howarth and his mother was Ellen Bullough.  His paternal grandparents were Adam Howarth and Ann Aspinall. He had a brother and eight sisters, named Adam, Ann, Alice, Martha, Elizabeth, Pamela, Ellen, Rachel and Martha.  He was the youngest of the ten children.
