Ann was born in November 1828 in Westhoughton and her baptism took place there on November 30th, 1828.1 2  Ann's father was John Howarth and her mother was Ellen Bullough.  Her paternal grandparents were Adam Howarth and Ann Aspinall. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Adam, John, Alice, Martha, Elizabeth, Pamela, Ellen, Rachel and Martha.  She was the second oldest of the ten children.
