Harriet's father was Robert Dod-Hopley and her mother was Ann Hopley. Her paternal grandparents were William John Dod-Hopley and Hannah Hopley; her maternal grandparents were Charles Hopley and Mary Poovah. She had two brothers and five sisters, named John, Robert, Ann, Elizabeth, Hannah, Robert and Amelia. She was the third oldest of the eight children.

- Unmarried in 1851, but not with family at farm by 1861.
  
  In 1861, Harriet Hopley (39, visitor) is staying with George and Catherine Parker in Lewisham, Sydenham, described as a gentleman's daughter. In 1871 shw was back at Billinge with here spinster sisters.
