Robert's father was Robert Dod-Hopley and his mother was Ann Hopley.  His paternal grandparents were William John Dod-Hopley and Hannah Hopley; his maternal grandparents were Charles Hopley and Mary Poovah. He had a brother and six sisters, named John, Ann, Harriet, Elizabeth, Hannah, Robert and Amelia.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 68 on September 11th, 1891 in Lichfield.²
