Matthew was born in March 1847 in Wrexham.1  Matthew's father was John Eddowes and his mother was Mary Whitfield.  His paternal grandparents were John Eddowes and Elizabeth Jones; his maternal grandparents were John Whitfield and Mary Tomlinson. He had five brothers and five sisters, named George, Edwin, Thomas, John, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Esther, Mary and Lydia.  He died at the age of 30 on July 9th, 1877 in Birkenhead.  He was buried on July 11th, 1877 at the Flaybrick Memorial Gardens.2 3
