Thomas' father was John Davies and his mother was Ann Whitfield. His maternal grandparents were John Whitfield and Mary Tomlinson. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Joseph, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Maria and Catherine. He was the second youngest of the nine children.
