John was born in June 1843 in Holt and his baptism took place there on July 9th, 1843.¹²

John's father was John Davies and his mother was Ann Whitfield. His maternal grandparents were John Whitfield and Mary Tomlinson. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Joseph, Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Maria and Catherine. He was the youngest of the nine children.
