James' father was John Brockbank and his mother was Mary Ann Mather. His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Mercy Grime. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William, John, William, Joseph, William, Elizabeth and Mary. He was the sixth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 34 on July 16th, 1905.
