Mary was born in June 1837 in Bolton and her baptism took place on June 25th, 1837 at St. Peter's (Bolton) conducted by minister J D Thompson.1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Mercy Grime.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Happy Lomax; her maternal grandparents were William Grime and Mary Grime. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Ellen and Esther.  She was the second youngest of the four children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, Samuel and Jane.  She died at the age of 77 on November 29th, 1914 in Seacombe.2

‌Mary and John were married in a civil ceremony on November 21st, 1857 at St. Andrew's (Bolton).3  They had six sons and two daughters, named William, John, William, Joseph, James, William, Elizabeth and Mary.  There are no more children.

‌Mary and William were married in a civil ceremony on September 27th, 1900 in Birkenhead.3   There are no children.
