Joseph's father was John Brereton and his mother was Elizabeth Shenton.  His paternal grandparents were John Brereton and Ellen Latham. He had four brothers and six sisters, named James, James, William, Joseph, Ellen, Elizabeth, Mary, Martha, Harriet and Patience.  He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.  He died as an infant at 6 months old in December 1836 in Wybunbury.  He was buried on December 25th, 1836 in Wybunbury.¹
