Eliza's father was Richard Brereton and her mother was Eliza (Betty) Ramsden. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Bruerton and Ann Vickers. She had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Edwin, Richard, Emma and Lucy. She was the third oldest of the six children.
