Timothy's father was James Holder Bowling and his mother was Maria Mather. His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Rachel Hamer. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Joseph, James, James, Thomas, Hannah, Nanny, Ellen, Rachel, Sarah and Francis. He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
