Rachel's father was James Holder Bowling and her mother was Maria Mather. Her maternal grandparents were James Mather and Rachel Hamer. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, James, Timothy, James, Thomas, Hannah, Nanny, Ellen, Sarah and Francis. She was the seventh oldest of the eleven children. She died at the age of 55 in 1915.
