Paul was born on April 15th, 1897.  Paul's father was Hendrik Jacobus van der Merwe Martens and his mother was Anna Maria Isobella Martens.  His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Jacobus Martens and Elizabeth Maria Roos; his maternal grandparents were Jan (Tommie) Thomas Martens and Anna  Catharina Elizabeth Pretorius. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named Hendrik, Jan, Hendrik, Jacobus , Dewald, Gert , Gert, Charl, Stephanus (Fanie), Anna, Elizabeth , Maria, Maria and Talitha.  He was the second youngest of the fifteen children.  He died at the age of 29 on March 16th, 1927.
