Jacobus  was born on November 1st, 1883.  Jacobus 's father was Hendrik Jacobus van der Merwe Martens and his mother was Anna Maria Isobella Martens.  His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Jacobus Martens and Elizabeth Maria Roos; his maternal grandparents were Jan (Tommie) Thomas Martens and Anna  Catharina Elizabeth Pretorius. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named Hendrik, Jan, Hendrik, Dewald, Gert , Gert, Charl, Paul, Stephanus (Fanie), Anna, Elizabeth , Maria, Maria and Talitha.  He was the sixth oldest of the fifteen children.  He died at the age of 35 on August 24th, 1919.
