Hendrik was born on June 17th, 1878.  Hendrik's father was Hendrik Jacobus van der Merwe Martens and his mother was Anna Maria Isobella Martens.  His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Jacobus Martens and Elizabeth Maria Roos; his maternal grandparents were Jan (Tommie) Thomas Martens and Anna  Catharina Elizabeth Pretorius. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named Jan, Hendrik, Jacobus , Dewald, Gert , Gert, Charl, Paul, Stephanus (Fanie), Anna, Elizabeth , Maria, Maria and Talitha.  He was the third oldest of the fifteen children.  He died at 8 months old on March 4th, 1879.
