Report compiled by Roy Harris from information gathered from various sources. The report covers almost exclusively only SOME of the very virile descendants of brothers Jan Thomas and Hendrik Jacobus Martens born in 1800 and 1802 respectively. They were Voortrekkers who are listed as having fought at The Battle of Blood River. Jan Thomas settled on the outskirts of Greytown on the farm Highbury and Hendrik Jacobus just the other side of the Umvoti River at Sophiadale which is still owned by his family.

The family is complicated by variations in spelling of names (Joshua/ Josua, Catharina/Cathrina), the Afrikaans custom of naming sons after themselves and brothers (there are at least 10 Jan Thomas Martens'! and even a Jansie Thomasina!), and marriages between cousins. The latter factor could be particularly confusing if the family gravitated towards the female side of the family. In such a case, descendants may erroneously assume that the "main" Grandpa Martens was Father's Dad whereas in fact the connection was through the Mother.
