    I am the great-great-grandson of Hendrik Jacobus van der Merwe Martens (1848/49 - 1919). His eldest daughter, Anna Catharina Elizabeth is my graet-grandmother. She married Charles James Laurens, who was born on the island of Jersey. Their daughter, Anna Maria Isabella, married my grandpa, Robert Walter Christison (born 1890). I never knew her, but I was about ten when grandpa died.
    
    I am writing a collection of little 'vignettes' about my extended family. The Martenses are just one of branches that interest me. This may be for family members, but it may also be for publication. It is not a family history; just a series of musings, with historical anecdotes as departure points.
    
    For this reason, I am looking for (true) stories, rather than genealogical details, of which there are a wealth available on the Net.
    
    If you know anything that illustrates the personalities of the Martenses, or times in which they lived, I'd be really pleased to hear about it.
