Maria was born on October 27th, 1891.  Maria's father was Hendrik Jacobus van der Merwe Martens and her mother was Anna Maria Isobella Martens.  Her paternal grandparents were Hendrik Jacobus Martens and Elizabeth Maria Roos; her maternal grandparents were Jan (Tommie) Thomas Martens and Anna  Catharina Elizabeth Pretorius. She had ten brothers and four sisters, named Hendrik, Jan, Hendrik, Jacobus , Dewald, Gert , Gert, Charl, Paul, Stephanus (Fanie), Anna, Elizabeth , Maria and Talitha.  She was the fifth youngest of the fifteen children.  She died at the age of 5 on July 7th, 1897.
