Emma Hay was born in 1849 in Shotley Bridge, County Durham, England. Emma Hay's father was John Renton and her mother was Hannah Siddell. Her paternal grandparents were William Renton and Marion Borrowman. She had six brothers and three sisters, named William Matthew, George, John, Thomas, Alfred Allan, Henry Charles, Marion, Annie C. and Hannah. She was the fourth youngest of the ten children.-
