Peter's father was Peter John McRosty and his mother was Margaret Stewart. His paternal grandparents were James McRosty and Janet McNab; his maternal grandparents were Daniel Stewart and Catharine McLaren. He had a brother and four sisters, named Alexander, Janet, Christian, Margaret and Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the six children. He had two half-brothers named James and John.-
