Ella was born in 1887 in Beccles, Suffolk, England.  Ella's father was Frederick Salhouse Tillett and her mother was Mary  Ann Gross.  Her maternal grandparents were Henry Gross and Mary Ann Mobbs. She had six brothers and five sisters, named Frederick, Harry, Samuel, Frederick, William, Bertie, Emma, Lavinia, Mary Ann, Ellen and Edith.  She was the youngest of the twelve children.
