Edith was born in 1883 in Beccles, Suffolk, England.  Edith's father was Frederick Salhouse Tillett and her mother was Mary  Ann Gross.  Her maternal grandparents were Henry Gross and Mary Ann Mobbs. She had six brothers and five sisters, named Frederick, Harry, Samuel, Frederick, William, Bertie, Emma, Lavinia, Mary Ann, Ellen and Ella.  She was the second youngest of the twelve children.
