Richard, known as "the Red Earl", was born in 1259 in Ulster Planatation, Ulster, Ireland.  "the Red Earl"'s father was Earl Walter de Burgh II of Ulster and his mother was Aveline FitzJohn.  His paternal grandfather was Richard Burgh and his paternal grandmother is Egidia Lacy; his maternal grandparents were John FitzGeoffrey and Isabel Bigod. He had two brothers and a sister, named William, Thomas and Egidia.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died before July 29th, 1326 in Athassel Monastery, , Tipperary, Ireland.  He was buried on August 29th, 1326 in Athassel Monastery, , Tipperary, Ireland.

‌"the Red Earl" and Margaret were married in a religious ceremony before February 27th, 1280 in Lanvalay, Connaught, Ireland.  They had a son and a daughter, named John and Eleanor.
