Robert was born in 1274.  Robert's father was Earl Robert Bruce VII of Carrick and his mother was Countess Margaret of Carrick.  His paternal grandparents were Lord Robert le Brus VI of Annandale and Lady Isabel de Clare; his maternal grandfather was Earl Neil of Carrick and his maternal grandmother is Margaret Stewart. He had two sisters named Christina and Matilda.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died  due to leprosy at the age of 55 in 1329.
