General Notes

Quoting from a news article published on her 60th anniversary onApril 28, 1930, "Mary was born in Missouri on July 24, 1850, moved withher mother to Rising Sun in 1854.  The Weaver homestead is within onemile from where she settled."  Before  her death in 1941, Mary wasprobably one of the oldest living settlers of Polk county, having movedthere in 1854 when the state was a vast prairie.  Her obituary stated," Being a pioneer, she experienced the privations and hardships knownonly to those who came early.  Her early life was in the days when thefriendly Indian rode the prairies and camped near her home.  The oxenteam was the mode of tilling the soil and the stage coach the mode oftransportation.  Rising Sun, (previously known as Barlow) was then astation on the old Stage route and in those days was a town of some 300population with business houses and shops, hotel, and post office, wherethe mail arrived but once or twice a week by stage--there were no mailroutes or deliveries in those days.  She witnessed the passing of a bandof Mormons in their trek from Navoo, Illinois to the west and often toldof her mother taking a tired and worn Mormon mother and babe into theirhome and caring for them.  She saw two brothers and neighbor boys marchoff to the Civil War and experienced those days of reconstruction whichfollowed the war.   She saw the vast prairies of Iowa developed into finefertile fields and beautiful modern homes, the oxen replaced by horses,the tallow candle by the oil lamp and later electricity, the advent ofthe railroad, the old wagon trails across the prairies converted intograveled roads and paved highways, the coming of the automobile and thenthe airplane.  She enjoyed life and watched these changes as they camewith interest and pride."  quotes her obit.
