The 1830 Census of Shelby County, In, Jackson Twp shows BenjaminWheeler between age 40-50; 2 sons under 5 (Henry 3 & Archibald age 1); 1dau between 5-10 Emilia "Mildred"; 1 dau between 10-15) Judea b 1819; 3dau between 15 & 20 (Dicey, 18, Eliz 15, and Berilla,16); one dau between20-30 Anjalina, 20: and wife Sarah Barlow Wheeler between 30-40: (Sarahis 38). Dau Sarah born in 1834 so not born yet. Thus he has a total ofseven daughters and 2 sons.
Ben was born about 1790 in Virginia. He was probably a teenagerwhen his family moved from their home in Bedfrod County, Va, into the newstate of Kentucky (admitted into the Union in 1792). He and his familyshowed up in censuses of 1810 and 1820 in Adair County, Ky. MarriedSarah Barlow Adair Co, Green River, KY on Oct 3, 1809. Elizabeth BarlowHayes born in Adair County, Ky Dec 28, 1815. The family (includingbrother Samuel with wife Malinda Davenport, and sons Evan T., Tilson,Green, Reason, and Thomas) then moved to first to Deleware County,Indiana 1820) and then to Shelby Co, Indiana in 1822. Had ten children.Henry, Archibald, Sarah & Emilia born in Indiana in Shelby Co. (AuntMate states Eliz was the youngest of 10, but my research has her as thethird child; but they were married in 1809 and had Eliz in 1815, so don'tthink they could have had ten children in this time frame.)
According to Star W. Rowland's notes," Benjamin purchased a farm inSection 25 in Jackson Township on December 15, 1821, paying $100 cash for80 acres. (Tract Books, Vol 10, pg 1 & 2))
the following spring, in april 1822, he brought an additional 80 acres atthe same price in Section 13, Jackson Twp." ("Early Landowners of ShelbyCounty, Ind" by Maurice Holmes, Nov 1995)
"Benjamin was listed in the 1830 Census of Shelby Co, In but diedbefore the census of 1840, which shows his widow, Sarah, as head ofhousehold. His children disposed of their 1/10 part shares of his realestate during the 1840's as shown by county deed books. Hiram Hays, Ben'sson-in-law, husband of Berila, was appointed September 9, 1836 toadminister the estate. (Probate Order Book B.)
Benjamin died in Shelby County in about 1836. His widow andchildren later moved to Polk County, Iowa by 1850.
