The History of S.E. Polk County, Iowa gives a grim picture ofPioneer living. "The homes of the Pioneers were crude indeed. Theyvaried in size, some being 14 x 16, others 16 x 18 feet in size. Theaverage one was made out of hewed green logs, had one door and onewindow, and puncheon floors. The cracks between the logs were chinkedwith sticks and daubed with mud. Most of the furniture was handmade andrough. When Polk County was settling up, families with five to tenmembers lived, slept and ate in one room. Everyone was poor on thefrontier, there were no dudes or aristocrats." "Severe weather presentedone aspect of hardship for cabin dwellers...Sickness was anotherhardship." It is suprising to me that so many of the early pioneerslived such long lives, but many children died in infancy or at a veryearly age.

1840 Census Shelby Co, IN, Jackson Twp, p 547: Henry 13, Archibald 11,Sarah 6, ? (between 5-10 girl); Sarah Wheeler, Head of household, 48.(Benjamin died in 1836) This page on the census has lots of importantinformation. Silas Breeding , 20, married Sarah's daughter MillyWheeler, 18. Also an Alex Breeding between ages 40-50, is probablySilas' father. Then there is Henry Barlow,55, brother of Sarah and sonof Lewis & Judah Barlow. He is listed with second wife Mahala Kinselo, age 40, and children Bird 1, Jesse 10, tom 11, Jeremiah 13, daughtersEliz 9, and Judith 16. His sons from his first wife are also on thispage. Henry's sons, and Sarah's nephews, John Barlow, 26 is llisted withhis wife, Anna Lisk, 22, his son Lewis, 2, and brother Lewis 28. (Thereis a mistake in the census cause it lists on of the two brothers asbetween 15-20 and they are both between 20-30.) Another nephew ofSarah's is listed. Blewford, 24, (son of Blewford) with his wifeClarrisa Fitz Randolph, 16; his mother Elizabeth, and his grandmotherJudah Smith Barlow, 85, (wife of Lewis who died in 1840.) Anothernephew, brother of Blewford and son of Blewford sr, listed is GeorgeBarlow, 22 and his wife Charity Fitz Randolph, 21 and daughter Elizabeth,2. It appears that the Barlow brothers married Fitz Randolph sisters. Is it any wonder that I have had trouble with the Barlow family.
