He enlisted in September 1776 in Staunton County, Virginia andserved as a fifer (private) in the company of Capt. Michael Bowyer (AuntMate's family history lists his as Michael Bowgeis), Col. James Woods'12th Virginia regiment, Sept,1776-Oct, 1779. He also served in theartillery in the 4th and 8th Virginia Regiments, and he participated inthe Battles of Iron Hill, Brandywine, Germantown, and many skirmishes. He was discharged at West Point, New York. He was born 1755 in {Germanyor Va}, died in Mt. Auburn, In (DAR Mary Barlow Sims #75881, born in Mt.Auburn, In)
Pension records show he was born in 1755 in Culpeper County, Va (notGermany, although he's descended from the Germanna Barlows), after thewar he lived in Va a short time, then moved to Washington County Ky(1780-1809). In 1782 he married Judah Francis Smith in Green River,Adair Co, KY. Some feel Judah is a descendant of Michael or MatthisSmith of the original 1717 Germanna settlers. All of their children wereborn in Washington County KY. (In 1792 Lewis is listed as a taxpayer inWashington County with many of his relatives.) In 1809 he movedsouthward to Adair Co, Ky. Remember this is where he was married soJudah might have had family in the area. He purchased a 100 acre farmwhich he brought from John Dawson in 1817, although he never received adeed from Mr. Dawson, according to his 1832 pension application. AdairCounty also shows the marriages of his son Jeremiah and also his daughterSarah (to Benj Wheeler in October of 1809.) Lewis's son Henry, alreadymarried, was a neighbor in 1810 but he was to lose his wife before 1820.It had to be tough for Henry to raise two boys under 10 without a mother, but I assume his family helped out. Itchy feet and the promise of cheapland always kept their faces pointed Westward (or North in this case).Lewis sold the Adair County, KY land to Joseph Kellerson (Callison) for$250 and by 1820 he (age 65) and his family were in Deleware County,Indiana (now shelby County) and in 1822 he brought a farm in ShelbyCounty, Jackson Township, Indiana. He died November, 1836 in MT Auburn,Shelby Co, Indiana. source: Mary Margaret Wolf book.
