Bill Rowland says this family found in the 1790 and 1800 censuses in WakeCo, NC. Bill also said that James was born in Nansemond County, Virginiawhich is near Norfolk.
1790 CENSUS Wake Co, North Carolina, p259 (near bottom -Ancestry .cominage #12 of 20) shows James Hays 1-3-5-,-19-28 This means: 1 free maleage 16+ (James Sr.); 3 free males under 16 (Lewis was age 8 but who wereother 2 sons?); 5 free females (Sarah plus 4 daughters?);- 19 freeOthers; and 28 slaves. Not sure if this is right family. Need moreresearch.

1 Male 10-15 (my James born 1815 so age 15 in this census); 1 male age20-30 (Hiram b. abt 1810, age 20, and he is still at home because hedidn't marry Berilla Wheeler [Elizabeth Wheeler Hay's sister] until Marchof 1831); 1 male between 50-60 (James Sr. b 1775 age 55 at this time);1 Female age 10-15 (Phebe born in 1818, age 12); 1 female between 50-60(Sarah b abt 1774, age 56).
