William was born in 1803.  William's father was James B. Hayes , Sr and his mother was Sarah.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hayes and Judith Friar. He had four brothers and a sister, named Lewis, John, Hiram, James B. and Phebe Ann.  He is the second oldest of the six children.
