JEROME was born on July 7th, 1827 in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana.1 JEROME's father was HYPOLITE Oge Couvillon and his mother was *HELOISE Rabalais. His paternal grandparents were PIERRE Couvillon and *BRIGETTE Mayeux; his maternal grandparents were Rene Paulin Rabalais and Josephine Celeste Bordelon. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Hypolite Oge, Grigoire, Ludger Hypolite, Philogene Anatole, Edvise, Heloise, Ermantine and Edmonia Herminia. He was the oldest of the nine children. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Olivier, Jean Baptiste, Elphege and Helene. He died at the age of 85 on November 9th, 1912 in Cottonport, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. It is noted in the records that Scholastique was the daughter of deceased Antoine Mayeux & Rosaline Barre' widow in her second marriage to Hypolite Mayeux. It is also noted that Hypolite Couvillon was deceased. Witnesses to the marriage were: Don Louis Moreau, Pierre Couvillon Jr, Sosthene Couvillon. Book B-2, page 129 of the Marriage Books of the Avoyelles Parish Court House.
The 1860 Census shows this couple with 7 children at home. Also living there was 14 year old Celina Couvillon, and the 60 year old widow Hypolite Mayeux (Rose Broyard Barré - Scholastique's mother). By August Rose was living with another daughter, Antoinette. Living on one side of them was Jerome's brother Hypolite O Couvillon and his wife Susanne. On the other side was Hypolite & Eliza Ducote. Value of the farm was $4,000.
