WILLIAM HURT JENKINS OBITUARY
THE METHODIST ADVOCATE
SUTTON, WEST VIRGINIA,
JANUARY 25, 1899
Died at his residence on Two Mile, Kanawha county, December 20, 1898.William H. Jenkins, in the 74th year of his life. Bro. Jenkins was longa member of the M.E. Church, South, at Wesley Chapel. Truly it may besaid of him that he was a good man and had the respect of all who knewhim.
Death came to him suddenly, but found him ready. He gently fell onsleep, and was found in bed with his hands folded across his breast, justas he had placed himself as he retired for the night. Bro. Jenkins was aman of kindly nature, and his genial, sunshiny temperament made him afavorite with all who came in contact with him. He was a typical oldEastern Virginian and loved to dwell upon the scenes of his boyhood daysin Appomattox county, where he was born. The night God called him homehe was unusually reminiscent, and his mind reverted with pleasure to thetimes long ago and his neighbors in that country. The writer had only aslight acquaintance with him but he found him a true man and impressedhim as one just waiting to go home.He was a devoted husband, and a kindand indulgent father, a generous and sympathetic neighbor. He will bemissed in all the relations of life in which he did nobly his part. MayGod comfort the widow in her affliction and sanctify it to her good andbless the large number of children and grand-children, and may those whoare out of Christ soon be brought to follow their father's God. All thesons and daughters were present at the funeral, also his nine livingbrothers and sisters together with the grand-children and a largeconcourse of friends, all testifying to the worth of the subject of thissketch. The funeral was from Wesley Chapel and was preached by thewriter from the text, "For David after he had served his own generationby the will of God fell on sleep." Acts 13-36. His body was laid to restin the old Jenkins cemetery to await the resurrection morning. May hismantle fall on his children and grand-children, and may they followChrist whom he loved, and serve the church whose cause was dear to hisheart, and may we all employ his virtues and be ready when God calls usup higher. "Servant of God well done, rest from thy loved employ."Geo.S. LightenerCharleston, W. Va.
